Oundle Cinema presents

Sunday 22nd September

7.30pm FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS (12A)

Stahl Theatre, Oundle

West Street, PE8 4EJ

Director: Chris Foggin

Duration: 1h 52m

Starring: Daniel Mays, Tuppence Middleton, James Purefoy

Daniel Mays (Line of Duty) is a Londoner well and truly out of his depth in a Cornish fishing village where he meets ten doughty fishermen singing sea shanties, “the pop songs of 1752”.  Based on how the real life Fisherman’s Friends from Port Isaac found fame, this is a lovely mixture of comedy and drama guaranteed to leave you feeling good.

‘This gentle, sweet-natured comedy has warmth and a certain X factor of likability, helped by big-hearted performances from a cast including Daniel Mays and Tuppence Middleton.’ Mike Cahill, Guardian

We join the Archbishop, Terry and a host of other colourful characters as they travel around the world. Along the way, the Archbishop meets the Pope in Ghana, has a photo call with koalas, and meets the crowd via an ‘archmobile’ in Canada. He and his staff experience extreme weather conditions as well as some rather unusual local customs, entertainment and souvenir gifts, and an array of unfamiliar food and drink.

Whether navigating huge crowds or temperamental sound systems or dealing with the fact that their party has arrived at the wrong place or on the wrong day, the Archbishop remains affable and good natured, even when, despite Terry’s and the team’s best efforts, events descend into – in Runcie’s own words – ‘a bit of a shambles’. Terry’s engaging narrative also sheds light on the history of Lambeth Palace and the way in which the role of Archbishop of Canterbury has evolved over the years.

Terry Waite CBE was Advisor to the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1980 to 1992.
