Welcome to CPSO’s new season and after the novelty of new ideas and initiatives during last year’s ground breaking season under Steve Bingham, we are pleased to bring you this wonderful romantic and dramatic repertoire in our autumn concert. This concert is not without its novelty; the Saxophone Concerto by Alexander Glazounov is another CPSO first, played by the brilliant virtuoso, Gillian Blair. The saxophone probably best known for its impact on the big swing bands, also has a deeply lyrical and expressive tone which is the aspect that Glazounov brings out beautifully in his thoughtful concerto - a sound not to be missed.

The concert starts with Humperdinck’s Overture to Hansel and Gretel, depicting the famous fairy tale which reaches its happy ending after various wild and sinister goings on, incorporating many melodies that you will all recognise.

Finally to America and Dvorak; the brilliant Czech composer’s The New World symphony. Who cannot listen to these stirring, exciting sounds of adventure without a tingle down the spine, noting the wistful American-Indian melodies along the way. The renowned slow movement with its brooding chorale start, its famous cor-anglais solo and shimmering high woodwind expressing the frisson of wind in the trees is just stunning; as is the wild whirlwind furiant dance of the third movement. The heroic sounds of the full orchestra bring this tremendously and rightly popular symphony to a triumphant conclusion under the inspired leadership of Steve Bingham.

Don’t miss out on this brilliant concert, book your tickets today!
