Local Authors Event featuring Jane Isaac, Helen Gould and Peter Morrell

Friday, 5th May at 7:30pm

St Peter's Church, Oundle, PE8 4AL

The Festival of Literature is very pleased to support and promote several of our very talented local authors. We have a very rich and varied group of authors in this area so please come along and find out more about them and their books; perhaps you will be inspired to read a new book or motivated to put pen to paper yourself!

Jane Isaac: The Lies Within

The Lies Within is the third novel in Jane’s second series. Grace Bannister is distraught after her daughter's body is found in the Leicestershire country lane. DI Will Jackman delves into the case but when the police discover another victim, the spotlight falls on Grace. Can Jackman find the killer, before Grace is convicted of a crime she didn't commit?

Helen Claire Gould: Floodtide

Floodtide is set on icy Naxada, the Shiranu farm in lava tubes under a dormant volcano, avoiding hunter tribe the Sargussi. But the mutually-hostile tribes’ world will soon be torn apart by natural forces. Planetary geologist and astronomer Jordas Krata, part of a team observing an incoming asteroid, enters this precarious balance of nature to rescue both tribes from the destruction about to rain down on them and help resettle them on a safer planet.

Peter Morrell: The Honourable Member of Pepynbridge

In Peter’s third novel Ralph Waters QC, is The Honourable Member for the constituency of Pepynbridge Forest. Ralph asks the rector, to marry him and his partner Pascal in St Aidan’s Abbey. When Herbie points out that it would be against the law, Ralph announces he is piloting a Private Members’ Bill through the House of Commons to force the Church of England to recognise and conduct same gender marriages. Ralph’s request is discussed by a deeply divided Parochial Church Council.

Freya Goldmark - Violin

Lehár -Gold and Silver Waltz
Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto
Mahler - Symphony No. 1 'Titan'

Local soloist and rising star, Freya Goldmark, makes her Rutland Sinfonia debut in May with Mendelssohn's ever popularViolin Concerto, premiered in 1845 and considered one of the first Romantic era concertos.

The concert begins by taking us to the Viennese ball to hear Lehár's glittering 'Gold and Silver' waltz and concludes with a performance of the first of Mahler's massive symphonies, originally called 'Titan'. This is a work of great contrasts from the ethereal beginning evoking nature, to the funeral dirge of Frère Jacques on a solo double bass, the lively Scherzo and the heroic finale with the horn section standing with their bells up for extra dramatic effect!

Director: Otto Bell
Release: 2016
Runtime: 1hr 27min

‘Stunning’, ‘Inspiring’, ‘Enchanting’, ‘Thrilling’... just some of the epithets used to characterise The Eagle Huntress. And yes, it is a documentary! Set in the bare and forbidding Mongolian mountains, the film follows a 13-year-old girl’s quest to become the first female eagle hunter in twelve generations of her Kazakh family. Aisholpan fights against tradition, but also to prove herself. It is a story that gives insight into a nomadic society that still has very little in material things and yet has a great sense of self. It is also a story of a golden eagle and its place in between nature and humanity.
