Three popular classics can be heard in the orchestra’s annual autumn concert in St Peter’s Church, Oundle. Verdi’s stirring Overture ‘The Force of Destiny’ reached a wide audience as the sound track for the films ‘Jean De Florette’ and ‘Manon Des Sources’ - and more recently in an advert for lager! Then Mozart’s beautiful Clarinet Concerto will be performed by Marie Lloyd, one of the UK’s leading clarinetists, and a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. The immediate inspiration for our final piece, Symphonie Fantastique, was the composer’s infatuation with the Irish Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson. When Berlioz saw her in Paris in the roles of Ophelia and Juliet he declared 'I will marry that woman and on that drama, I will write my greatest symphony'. His Symphonie Fantastique is a tour de force for the orchestra with the 'March to the Scaffold' and 'The Witches' Sabbath' among the highlights.

Our Young Soloists’ Concert includes three terrific brass concertos and a number of American pieces. It doesn’t get more American than Gershwin’s 'Rhapsody in Blue' and those of you who came to our recent ‘Post Cards from America’ concert will share our excitement about hearing more music by Márquez - this time an arrangement of the Conga! Starting this concert, is the premiere of ‘The Irish Brigade’ by local composer George Brown - the American connection being that these troops fought at Gettysburg.

Our Season's Finale takes us from Shakespeare's (and Leicester's) famous King in Walton’s 'Prelude to Richard III' to the emotion of Mozart’s dark and brooding 'Piano Concerto No. 20' with Anne Bolt as soloist. Mozart's D minor piano concerto is one of contrasts. The drama of the first movement is followed by the sublime Romance and then the lively Finale. The programme ends with the music Arthur Bliss wrote at the height of his powers in 1937 for his ballet ‘Checkmate’, which depicts the moves of Bishops, Knights, Kings and Queens as they clash in a dramatic game of chess. It is considered a cornerstone of the British ballet repertoire.
